State Department Eyes AI to Help Make Data-Driven Decisions, Support Career Development

The Department of State sees the potential of artificial intelligence to help realize its mission and support individuals in charting their career paths.

Speaking at a Federal News Network-moderated panel at the recent ATARC AI Summit, Don Bauer, chief technology officer at the department’s Bureau of Global Talent Management, said that his team is working to identify the next steps on how the technology can sift through internal information and help leaders make decisions using the data. The State Department’s technology lead’s statement comes after the agency received authority to operate AI on sensitive internal data.

He also discussed a project that uses AI to help employees identify a career path for them, the Federal News Network reported.

Bauer added that the technology will help the department make data-driven decisions every time.

The department has been focusing its efforts to harness the potential of AI. In November 2023, it issued a new strategy for responsible and ethical procurement of the technology. It has also called for the international community to address the risks and opportunities associated with AI.
