SDA Selects Three Contractors to Build 54 Satellites for Tranche 2 Tracking Layer Constellation

The Space Development Agency has awarded three contractors to develop 54 satellites to support the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture effort.

Companies tapped to join the project are L3Harris Technologies, Lockheed Martin and Sierra Space, which are each expected to deliver and operate 19 space vehicles that will be part of the Tranche 2 Tracking Layer constellation.

The T2 Tracking Layer will feature some satellites equipped with fire control missile defense infrared sensor capabilities to help warfighters on the battlefield, the SDA said.

SDA Director Derek Tournear, a past POC speaker and Wash100 winner, said the agency is glad to have Sierra Space in the program when the marketplace needs technology for missile warning, tracking and defense missions.

The SDA began work on the T2 Tracking Layer in 2023 when it asked the industry for proposals for developing prototype satellites. In a September 2023 solicitation notice, the agency revealed plans to procure at least 54 infrared sensor-equipped space vehicles.

Tranche 2 will also feature a global positioning system alternative to provide positioning, navigation and timing capabilities for the Department of Defense.
