US Space Force to Test New Command Structure for Enhanced Mission Oversight
The chief of space operations said the U.S. Space Force will experiment with a new command structure where a unit will be responsible for all aspects of a mission area.
Chance Saltzman, a 2023 Wash100 winner and a past Potomac Officers Club event speaker, announced during the Air & Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber conference that the Space Force will establish two integrated mission deltas: one for space electronic warfare and one for position, navigation and timing satellites. The space EW delta will oversee all aspects of satellite jamming and adversarial satellite jamming deterrence while the PNT delta will maintain and operate global positioning satellites for the United States and its allies.
Saltzman said the establishment of the new units is necessary to keep abreast with demand for space services worldwide, SpaceNews reported.
The experiment comes a week after Department of the Air Force Secretary and 2023 Wash100 winner Frank Kendall called for an organizational mindset change to combat adversarial threats. According to Kendall, the Air Force should optimize its structures in anticipation of power conflicts and ensure that the service’s adversarial deterrence capabilities will not erode further.
