VA on Track to Expand Use of AI Data Sets

The Department of Veterans Affairs is poised to expand its artificial intelligence program and develop novel use cases for the technology.

Speaking at AFCEA’s Automation Transformation conference, VA Director of AI Gil Alterovitz said it is a challenge for the department to make its data sets ready for use in AI. According to Alterovitz, AI can be leveraged for secondary uses by releasing broader ecosystems of data sets that can be chosen and applied to meet specific AI projects, Government CIO Media reported.

Citing better predictive capabilities for advanced medical diagnostics, Alterovitz also noted that combining structured and unstructured data sets in AI projects provide better results.

Additionally, Alterovitz suggested creating synthetic data sets that copy statistics of a given data set to ensure cybersecurity while providing access to proprietary medical data.
