DOD Announces New Commercial Space Integration Strategy

The Department of Defense has released its 2024 Commercial Space Integration Strategy, which outlines a plan to incorporate commercial space solutions effectively into national security space architectures, Defense .gov reported.

The strategy includes four primary goals: ensuring access to commercial solutions throughout conflict, pre-crisis integration, establishing security for commercial solutions and supporting the development of new commercial solutions for military use.

Also part of the strategy are four principles the Defense Department seeks to adhere to in its decision-making process. First, the department will maintain a balance between government and commercial solutions to avoid overreliance on a single source.

Interoperability will also be upheld as the department seeks to implement military standards and procedures that ensure compatibility between government and commercial solutions, while also allowing the commercial sector to innovate quickly.

The department will also prioritize building resilience into its space architectures by using a wider range of commercial providers and solutions. The fourth and last principle emphasizes the DOD’s commitment to follow international norms and ethical standards for space activities when working with commercial partners.

Additionally, to achieve integration, the DOD will partner with commercial entities to address risks, including adversarial threats to national security space systems, and foster a secure, stable and sustainable space domain.
