Nuclear Regulatory Commission Unveils Plan to Leverage Artificial Intelligence

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has proposed a comprehensive plan to integrate artificial intelligence into the agency’s operations.

The plan includes the development of an agency-wide framework that addresses key areas such as AI governance, talent recruitment and training, data management improvements and IT infrastructure upgrades to facilitate AI adoption, FedScoop reported.

To support its AI-related initiatives, the NRC has allocated over $4 million for its fiscal year 2025 budget proposal.

The report identifies 36 potential applications for AI technologies within the NRC. The use cases, some of which involve generative AI, were selected from a larger pool of 61 possibilities, with the remaining applications to be addressed using traditional methods.

The NRC is currently exploring the use of AI for non-regulatory activities but has expressed interest in expanding its application to core regulatory functions.

To prepare for the potential expansion, the agency is also investing in AI research to equip its staff with knowledge and expertise to prepare for AI-driven regulatory reviews.
