Mr. Tanner currently serves as the Deputy DON CIO ensuring the DON’s $12+B Information Technology portfolio is delivering mission relevant outcomes to the Fleet and Fleet Marine Force. In his role, he supports the DON CIO’s Information Superiority Vision to deliver Optimized and Secured capabilities that allow the Navy and USMC to effectively execute mission critical Decisions at speed and scale. Mr. Tanner plays a key role in ensuring that Naval Information Technology capabilities are operationally ready, secure by design, and highly resilient. Key focus areas include Zero Trust Architecture and Operations, Cyber Readiness, Operational Resilience and Continuous Integration and Delivery.

Prior to his role as Deputy CIO Mr. Tanner served as the Director of the DevSecOps Center of Excellence for the Navy’s Program Executive Office for Digital and Enterprise Services (PEO Digital). In this role, Mr. Tanner oversaw and coordinated the efforts of over 300 personnel delivering world-class enterprise services and digital experience at the speed of mission to the Navy and Marine Corps across Cloud Platforms, Digital Workplaces, Cyber Operations, End User Services, Infrastructure, and more. Over his career he has held positions with multiple technology companies, most recently as a Senior Associate with Booz Allen Hamilton’s Strategic Innovation Group, specializing in Digital Technology implementation and strategy focused on Cloud Computing, Enterprise Collaboration, Open Innovation and Enterprise Security. He has supported several defense clients including the Joint Staff Office of the Chief Information Officer, the Defense Information Systems Agency, Naval
Special Warfare Group 10, and US European Command.

In addition to his civilian career, Mr. Tanner was also a Naval Officer and attained the rank of Captain while serving in multiple unit command and major staff director positions over a 31-year Active and Reserve career. Career highlights include serving as a Division Officer in USS DRUM (SSN-677) from 1993-1995, as well as Staff G6 for the Central Corps Advisory Group (CCAG), 201st Corps, Task Force Phoenix in Pol-E-Charkhi Afghanistan supporting Operation Enduring Freedom from 2005 to 2006. Most recently he was recalled to active duty in 2016 and served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications (N6) and Deputy CIO for US Fleet Cyber Command, Commander Tenth Fleet in Fort Meade Maryland before retiring from the US Navy Reserve in 2022.

Mr. Tanner is a native of Jefferson City, MO and a 1991 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with honors. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Brenau University in 1997, and is a Qualified Naval Nuclear Engineer. He has earned multiple military and civilian awards throughout his career.
