Defense Intelligence Agency Working on Centralized AI Governance

Ramesh Menon, the Defense Intelligence Agency’s chief technology officer, has revealed that his organization is setting up a “community of interest” to guide artificial intelligence development and standards.

Speaking to reporters at the Department of Defense Intelligence Information System conference, he said the DIA is finalizing the centralized governance model and is planning to release more information in 2024, Breaking Defense reported.

The model is one of several initiatives laid out in a new AI plan recently approved by DIA Director Gen. Scott Berrier, Menon noted. He added that the agency collaborated with other members of the intelligence community to locate gaps the strategy could fill.

Menon also shared that the IC is making a concerted effort to adopt a maturity framework so every agency can be assessed with the same AI metrics. “Our job at this point is to operationalize AI,” he explained.

News of the DIA’s plan comes after the DOD unveiled an AI adoption strategy to enhance battlefield decision-making.
