NIST Appoints Kevin Stine as Information Technology Laboratory Director

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has announced the appointment of Kevin Stine as the new director of its Information Technology Laboratory tasked with cultivating IT trust through analysis, testing and standardization.

Undersecretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Laurie Locascio acknowledged the “wealth of experience” that Stine brings to his new position, including his leadership role in the development of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. The task was accomplished while Stine was the ITL’s Applied Cybersecurity Division director, the NIST said Wednesday.

The ITL, one of the six NIST research laboratories, has over 600 personnel and guest researchers supporting the agency via fundamental and applied studies in such fields as computer science, statistics, systems engineering and cybersecurity.

The ITL’s Applied Cybersecurity Division, which Stine has headed since 2015, is tasked with several NIST priority projects, such as the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence.

Before he joined NIST in 2006, Stine had a four-year stint at the Food and Drug Administration, where he served as its first chief information security officer and assisted in the development of the FDA’s cybersecurity program.

An information systems management graduate from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Stine worked for three years in the private industry before shifting to government service.
