Official Says DOD Eyeing December Release for Industrial Strategy

Laura Taylor-Kale, assistant secretary of defense for industrial base policy, said the Department of Defense intends to publish its first National Defense Industrial Strategy in December.

Speaking at the recent 2023 Defense Conference, she noted that the document will focus on crafting a roadmap to guide programs, policies and investments to strengthen U.S. industrial infrastructure, the DOD reported Friday.

Taylor-Kale added that the department will later issue an implementation plan for the strategy.

She explained that recent events such as the Ukraine conflict showed that the industrial base should be prepared to meet DOD needs. According to Taylor-Kale, the goal is to work alongside the federal government, industry and allies to optimize defense industrial policy.

The strategy’s key areas include supply chain resilience, faster and more affordable production at scale, workforce readiness, flexible acquisition and implementation of metrics, she added.

Taylor-Kale went on to say that she wants innovative businesses to participate in the industrial base, especially those that could offer dual-use technologies to warfighters.
